Basic Modules

Non-core modules has been removed from MDLite package to keep MD team more focus on basic modules development and improvement. Add-on modules will be available in seperate package where you can select your own choice and add them via modules admin page.

The following list are the basic modules that included in MDLite release package: Notes Never deactivate or remove the basic modules from your system since most of them are required for MDLite to work properly. However, if you still want to slim your modules you can remove Tinymax, MDMenus and Error modules.

Settings
Once you have successfully installed MD in your system the first required action is to configure your site settings. You need to give all the mandatory settings to have your site working properly.

There are two sections available in Settings Module, these consist of General Settings and Allowed HTML Settings. Generally, you would not be required to make any changes in HTML settings as the default settings have been set to be secure for common sites. Unless you know what are you doing it is recommended to keep the default Allowed HTML Settings.

General Settings

Site Name: Fill your site name in this field. Browsers will automatically detect this field as site title. To use this label anywhere else in your page you can add the {site-name} tag inside your theme template files. Most of MD theme has included this tag inside the theme templates.
Site Logo: The default file name is logo.gif located under your-site/images directory. To use your own logo image upload the image logo file to replace the existing logo. You can use .gif, .jpg or .png extension file for your own logo.

You can locate the logo under your default theme. Use {images-path}/logo.gif tag inside your theme template files to replace the existing logo location.
Description of site: Fill this field with a short description of the site or its purposes. It will be shown in the browser window titlebar and in search engine as your website description as well.
Meta keywords: Fill this field with keywords of your site, comma separated, this will be used by search engines purpose.
Dynamic MetaKeywords: This option use the words of the articles from News module in key for the web search engines.
Use organized admin panel: Let you choose between a simple (all modules' name in a page) or graphical admin page (with Icons, divided per sections).
Site start date: Month and year of the site installation.
Administrator e-mail address: Enter the admin email address, the system will send any notification generated from modules to this address.
Default theme for your site: Select a theme to be an active theme from themes listed under your theme directory. All visitors and non-logged users will see this one. If you install MDChannel add-on module, this module allows you to assign specific theme for each user's group.
Locale time format: This allow the system recognize your local time formatted.
Time zone: Select your time zone. This time zone only work if your server is located in your area, otherwise you have to select a different zone that match with your local time.
Start page: Select a module from the dropdown list combo that will become active as your main index page. The default setting is News module where visitors will see News everytime they browse your web-site main page.
Number of stories to show on admin menu: You can configure the number of posted articles will be shown in administration control panel main page. This feature will help you to maintain the latest posted articles from News module. The maximum list setting is 50 articles.
Number of stories to show on homepage: This feature only work if you use News module as your start page and in News module main page. You can configure how many summary articles will be shown in your homepage or News module main page. The default setting is 10 summary articles.
Sort stories on homepage by: Choose the list order of the articles in the home page [if you use News module as start page] or in News module main page by Articles ID or releasing date.
Enable icons in administration menu: This feature is not working properly yet. The concept is to allows administrator only see text links instead of icons in administration menu.
Enable AntiCracker: Email notification will be sent to administrators as warning of the cross site scripting possibilities into your site.
Activate MDadvice feature: Let the admin receive important news about updates and security fixes for MDLite, sent by maxdev.it - strongly suggested!
Activate tool tips: This feature will provide a help tips icon Help enable in modules administration page.

General Settings con't

Select the main language for your site: Select your site main language from the drop down list.
Detect language:: MDLite able to autodetect the user language based on user's browser settings. However, please consider that this function is in beta phase it might be not working properly.
Activate multi-language support?: If you plan to use multi language in your site you can enable this feature. Make sure that you provide the lang package in your MD files. You can download language package from MaxDev Download page.
Activate compression?: This option compress files during download in order to speed-up the loading and output process. Ask your Hosting provider if they can support the compression feature.
Footer line: This area is shown in every page of the site and can be customized as needed, using html and even inserting images. We are really appreciate if you leave a link to MDLite as credits.
Backend title: MDLite support RSS feedback. The title will shown in other site who are using RSS to receive articles header from News module. This feature is enabled by default. To disable it you can rename the file, remove or just move the file backend.php to other directory.
Backend language: MDLite use this setting to pass some of your site content to other sites. Put here your site title or a short description.
Security level: This choice set the user session's lasting.
For medium security, users stay logged in for: If you have chosen a medium security level, this otion set for how many days the user session will be active. After that, user will have to login again.
Users become inactive after not using the system for: Set after how much time of inactivity the user is considered no more active.
Check referer on printer friendly page?: This function will be used for Referrers Module. This module is an add-on and not included in MDLite package.
Intranet: This option let you access your MDLite site with incomplete URL (like http://localhost or 127.0.0.1) or DNS non resolved. Keep in mind that some PHP versions require this settings to correctly access the site. Select it only if you work locally! Intranet should only be turned on if you cannot access MDPro with a fully-qualified host name (eg www.mysite.com). Enabling intranet removes a number of levels of security from MDPro, it is not recommended to run in this mode unless you are behind a firewall and users outside the firewall cannot gain access to your MDPro powered web site.

Allowed HTML Settings - HTML permissions settings

Here you can enable or disable some HTML TAGs used in news or stories. If it is not enabled, then its use is forbidden!

allowing parameters for img, span, marquee script embed object or iframe could leave your users exposed to external attacks and personal informations stealing. It is strongly suggested to leave these settings as per default, and modify them only if you know what you are doing and the risks you are going to take.

If you have configured your site settings the second action is to configure your users and groups. MDLite User Management is one of the MDLite powerfull feature that allows many controls and configuration for a single user or for a group. Below is the user admin main page snapshot and configuration steps in order list:

Config Terms: The first step is to customize user agreement for a new user registration.
Options: This feature is to manage the requirements for user registration, user profile, system check and validation.
User Groups: Here you can add, delete and edit user's group. Now you can assign a user belong to several groups. If you use MDChannel add-on these flexibilities allows you to have two types of groups, normal groups and channel groups.
User Profile Fields: This feature allows you to customize the user's field registration. You can edit, delete or add your own fields.
Create New User: Create a new user by administrators.
Edit Users: Edit users.
Search Users: Search users using various keywords and values.
Group Selection: A user can belong to group or groups.
Add Users: All required fields will be shown in the user admin main page that allow Administrators can add a new user directly.

There are two types of users, guests and registered users /members. Site administrators will manage the content that can be read by guests and registered users. If user registration is enabled, a visitor may register themselves via the provided link, otherwise administrator will add users from the Create New User control panel.

User Name: Fill a user name in this field. If your system is in Windows networking environment you can add user from Active Directory using LDAP feature. The active directory link will be shown in the main links for Windows after you activate LDAP feature from the Options configuration.

Email Address: Fill user email address in this field. In MDLite you can assign email address as login requirement instead of user name.

Password: Fill password twice both in this fields.

Select Group: For normal users you can select multiple group for a user. For MDChannel users just select a group that will use MDChannel features.

From the snapshot here you can see that in MDLite we have improved the users management interface. Now you can configure the settings to suit your needs based on single user or a multiple of users.

Configure Display: Additional link, click here to see the Configure Display interface.

Add new channel: Additional link only appear if MDChannel module available and activated.

Sort users list: Option to view user name by All Users or sorted alphabetically.

Users list: The sorted users list here will depend on how you configured the display. To edit a user click the user name or tick the box to edit multiple users using the selection options.

Selection option: Use this option to select all users or invert the selection.

Action selection: Select the action, copy, move or delete users from dropdown list.

Group selection: Targeted group where you want to copy, move or delete the users.

Here is a snapshot to configure the display where you can adjust the rows and columns of users list.

Enter the column and row number to limit the user list appear in a page. A pager will be shown if you have more users that are not fit into the selected columns and rows.

The Search Users functions enables administrators to search users based on users profile labels such as user name, email, location or any activated custom field from user profile settings.

To search more deeply, this function support boolean search where you can use OR and AND operator to get specific result.

Click the 'More' button then an additional boolean search will be added for differrent keyword selection. Click the 'Delete' button to remove unwanted search field. Both functions can be adjusted dynamically whereever you want to search user based on specific keywords.

User Profile Fields

Once a visitor have registered as your site member he can update and edit his user's profile via user account page. Site administrator can manage the profile fields from the control panel below. The feature here allows administrator to add new fields, delete or edit the existing fields.

User's field status: Here you can activate [ Active ] or de-activate [ inActive ] user's field by clicking the green and red button. The star [ Required Field] sign indicate the field is required. You can change the required field status from action column, see list number 4 below.

Label Position: This option allows you to change the user's field list order by clicking the up [ Up ] and down [ Down ] arrow button..

Required fields: Tick the box from the Required column to force user to fill the required fields.

Action: Here you can edit or delete the active fields or create a new field.

You can not delete the existing fields from default installation. The delete function only valid for new fields created using the dynamic fields option.

Label Lang: Label Lang is a label language definition that can be edited in lang files under MDUsers module directory.

Translation: Label language is a multilingual feature where you can use your own language to replace the english default label.

Aliasing: Alias and Linked To features only valid for default fields that can be configured via Edit fields link.

Db types: Fields database property. You can configure your fields database property from Edit fields link.

Once user have registered to the site the user will automatically belong to User Group. You are able to change this setting from the Option feature, to assign differrent group for the first time registered user.

The default installation provide 4 Groups: Admins, Managing Editors, Staff Writers and Users Group. Grouping the users will help you to maintain access level and priviliges of your users individually based on user or based on user's group. Once you set-up your groups structure then you will need to configure the access level using Permission Module.

The User Groups control panel allows you to edit and delete each group using the [Edit] Edit and [Delete] Delete button.

Never delete the Admins group!, unless you don't want to access your site anymore. To prevent from human errors it is recommended that you also assign an admin privilege based on user permission level at least for yourself as a site owner in addition to Admins Group permission level.

To manage users click the Group name, where you can add, remove users from Group or copy user to several groups. You can read more about this from Edit Users page.

This is a control panel to edit the existing group, where you can rename and configure the group main page for logged-in users. This feature also used by Add a new group feature.

Group Name: You can rename the existing group name in this field. For a new group enter your new name in this field.

Redirect to: The default setting for creating of new group is Do not redirect after login. You can create different main page for logged-in user based on their group.

From the snapshot on the right it show to you that every time Admins users group log-in to the system their main page will be redirected to admin page. The URL address in this sample is admin.php. You can enter any valid URL address in this field such as CMpro-v-p-1.htm, to open your CMpro page.

You can select to redirect the group main page based on URL by entering the URL address, or open an available module by selecting the Module name from the dropdown list, or redirect to certain page from News module page.

To delete a group just simply click the Delete button.

The features here allows you to configure the settings of your users profile and registrations. If you install MDLite in Windows network environment, the system will provide you LDAP activation to synchronize the Login system with your Windows authentication.

Agreements to our site: Write down your own Site Agreement in this field. The agreement will appear on User Registration page for a new user to your site.

Multi language defines: If you compile this field users can read this text pending registration procedure, if you leave it empty users can read text defined in languages files, if you leave defines multilanguage empty users can read generic text.

Submit News module allows your registered user to submit an article for your website. You also can provide unregistered users /visitors to your site to be able to submit articles by grant them a permission to this module.

As default installation, all content fields in MDLite included Tinymax Rich Text Editor module the WYSIWYG editor where the user can create content without having to know HTML language.

The article content is divided into two parts, Summary section at Article Text number 4 below and Extended Text. If you use News Module as your main page, you main page will only show the summary section. You can see the sample here from the News section.

Your Name: This is the submitter user name. It also will be shown in the article as Posted by user name.
Title: Fill the article title in this field.
Topic: Select the article's topic from the dropdown menu list. The available topics will depend on the topic items created from the Topics Module.
Article Text: This is the field where you can fill the article summary. It is recommended to break up your content using the Extended Text field to make your News module page can contain more articles summary.
Extended Text: As mentioned above use this field to enter the remaining content from the Article text. If you leave this field empty the read more button will not shown from your summary text.
Page break: This function allows you to create multipage inside your extended text section. Use a [pagebreak] tag to seperate the pages. You can not use page break in the Article Text section.

Once the user submitted the news a new news submission link will be appeared in Admin control panel at Waiting Content section for approval. Administrator will review the submitted article, add a proper category and post the article.

Waiting Content: This is a snapshot in the Waiting Content section at Admin Control Panel. If you installed other non-core content modules such as FAQ, Web Links all submitted request will be shown in this section as well. Click the submission number to open the Articles Administration.
Articles /Stories Administration: From this section Administrator can review all submitted request articles. There are two options available from the dropdownlist, Preview story to open the artile and Archive to archive the article.

Administrator can receive email notification from each submitted article to the system.

Notify of new submissions by email: Select Yes to enable this function.
Email to send the message: Fill the email address for the recipient.
Email subject: If you manage lot of sites you can use prefix in the subject field.
Email message: Write down the message that will appear in the notification email.
Email account: Fill any name here as Sender.
Submit button: Click Submit button to save the setting.

This function only work for Administrators and users who has the admin privilege to this module. It has some extra settings compare to Submit News module such as article's Category selection, add a Notes to the article and to program the article posted day.

Articles are one of the more important part of your site. This is the section where you can insert them or publish the ones that have arrived. From this panel articles can be published into several sections of the site depending from the settings of your site. Remember to check the spelling and the URL of your articles before publishing it!

Title: Here you can insert a title for your article, this one must be short and descriptive. An article cannot be published without a title, and if you will leave this field empty, you will lose the other parts of the story.
Topic: Select the article's topic from the dropdown menu list. Topics can be managed from News Topics Module.
Category: The submitted article from your user will not included category. As an Administrator you can pick the proper category for the article submission. On the right side of the selection you will see three additional funtions [Edit, Add, Delete category] to configure your Category items.In the Category list you can not edit and delete Article category, this is the default category.
Group viewer: This function only work if you have MDChannel installed and activated in your system. Article only can be viewed based on selected group viewer where you can provide specific information to each group in your system.
Publish on homepage: If you use News module as your home page, this function allow you to filter articles in the summary news in your front page. If the category of the article is different from "Article", it is possible to choose to publish or not to publish the article on the homepage by selecting Yes, or No.
Story text: This is the field where you can fill the article summary. It is recommended to break up your content using the Extended Text field to make your News module page can contain more articles summary.
Extended text: As mentioned above use this field to enter the remaining content from the Article text. The method to insert the text are the same of the field "Story text". This part of the article will be read from the viewer when he will click on "Read more", that will be created by the system itself if this field is not empty. Please attention that the Read More link could not be visible, if it is not prearrange in the block configuration. You also can use [pagebreak] to break down a long article content into multi pages. NOTE: This function only works in the Extended Text box.
Notes: You can add a note of the submitted and posted article.
Story Program: This function allow you to program the date of posted article to your site. In order to publish an article in a different date, select Yes. You can specify the desidered time using the date - time publish selection.

Finally you can preview or post the article. The Preview Stroy will appear in a new windows, where it will possible to see and to post the article. If you are sure with your article content then you can post the article by selecting the Post Story selection.

News Topics module allows you to filter news based on certain subject. You can provide your visitors with various filters where they can select their interested articles:

Below are the items description of the Topic module main page snapshot:

Show Topics: This link will open the same page as the topic main page.
Add New Topic: This link link will open the new topic editor.
Edit Topic Configurations: You can configure your topic module settings from this link.
Topics Display: This section display your topic name and topic image. You can show the topic image in your summary news page.
Edit /Delete Topic: Edit link will open the topic editor page. If you don't want a topic anymore you can delete them directly from this link.
If you delete a topic, all news stories and comments under the topic will be deleted as well. However, the topic icon will not be deleted from images/topics - that must be done manually.

If you already have a huge of news content in your site, you need this function to display a navigation link in your News module page. This link will show as >> Number of page: 1 Go to page 1

You can configure how you want to display the link location in your News page. To configure see the following list items:

Number of page links: Fill the number of pages you want to appear in the navigation link.
Number of columns: This function is the legacy from PostNuke, where you can configure the number of column of news summary article in the News module main page.
Top Links: Select from the option the location of the navigation the top of the page.
Bottom Links: Select from the option the location of the navigation at the bottom of the page.

MDMenus

The default installation package provide a menu that can be modified to meet your own menu links. You may edit the existing menu or create your own menu and delete the previous one. MDMenus allows you to create a vertical menu tree type at any depth level or just use it as standard vertical menu.

You can create several custom menus where you can insert them using Block feature anywhere in your pages.

Create new menu: To create a new menu click the link then it will open the Menu editor where you can assign the Menu Name. The new menu name will be listed in MDMenus admin page.
Menu List: All created menus will be shown in this section. The edit link will open the Menu editor. The delete link will remove the menu from your system and you need the related block from Blocks administration page.

Blocks Administrations

Block is a small application as a subset of module, that contain certain specific information such as Menu, Online Information or User's Login section. From non technical point of view, blocks will help site owner to locate sections of information in their site pages. Blocks may be placed at different locations on the page, although some will typically be placed at the same location such as Menu block.

Block's menu links

New block: To use blocks you have to create a New Block where all available blocks can be selected from the dropdown list. Each block will has its own configuration depend on the information generated from the module.
View blocks: This link will always bring you back to to Block's administration page.
Show active blocks: This function will filter the display, only active blocks will be shown in the list.
Configure: This function will enables or disables the use of collapsible menu icons and minimize buttons. To use this you have to see if the {block-control} tag is available inside the blocks template file.

Block's List

Order column: You can arrange the order of blocks position in the page area by clicking the arrow buttons.
Position column: This is the block area name inside your page template. The default position are Left, Center and Right area. You can define your own area names from AutoRender administration page.
Title column: Block title name.
Module column: The module name where your block generated the content.
Block name column: Type of blocks.
Block status column: You can de-activate and activate each block from this section.
Action Options column: Edit and delete function.

The above snapshot is the interface of new block function. There are two types of blocks that are included in your MD default package, standard blocks from Blocks module itself and each block which is belong to other module. From the dropdown list, both type of blocks are listed by Module/Block Name row such as Admin/Administration Block or MDUsers/Login Block. If you install an add-on module the system will detect all blocks in that module automatically.

To add a new block just follow the steps below: Block layout can be configured via Autorender template function. You can use generic template for all blocks or assign differrent template for each block. To learn more regarding block layout please browse the Autorender section.

This function allows your visitors to hide /unhide a block. Click the 'Check to enable collapsible menu icons' tick box to enable this function. If your theme does not support this feature you have to add manually the {block-control} tag in the theme's block templates.

Autorender is a rendering engine module that provide a powerful functions and flexible features to manage the presentation layer in MDLite application. This module allows webmaster and designers to customize web pages and modules layout via theme templates, compose the content blocks areas and other usefull stuff for your web pages.

To know a little bit how Autorender works within the system, take a look at the current page compare to main page as a sample. Both pages are created from differrent modules, CMpro and Cnl_Home module. From Autorender you can define which blocks can be shared such as menu on the left and composed various layout for page contents. However, to explore more on Autorender functions and features at least you required to have some knowledge on html and scripting languages.

AutoRender
Autorender: This is where you can add and configure your Autorender. You can configure default theme templates, block display and colors, as well as custom module templates, block display and colors and custom block templates.
Commands: This is where you can add and configure your own custom commands that you can use in your Autorender templates. You can also view the built-in Autorender commands.
Extras: This is where you can configure extra options for Autorender (i.e. AutoURLs, AutoPrint, etc.).
Cache: To speed up user's browser rendering visited pages are stored temporarily in the cache directory. You clean-up the cache files periodically from this section and define the cache expiration period from the entry field.

This function allows you to manage the permission level of your users and groups to access or administer the site content.

The following list will give you some ideas how you can utilize the permission features:

New group permission: Add a new permission to a group.
View group permissions: Display the permission list. This is the main page of permission module administration.
Settings: Configure the display of permissions list.
New user permission: Add a new permission to user.
View user permissions: Display user's permission list.
Filter the permission display: If you have a long permission list, this feature allow you to filter the display.
Filtered display: This section show the permission filtered display header.

Sequence: The system will validate the permission access by sequences.
Shift: From this column you can adjust the permission sequences by clicking the top and down arrow button.
Group: Group name.
Component: You can assign permission to module and block and its components. For example CMpro::subjects means you want to configure a permission for certain subject in CMpro module.
Instance: This the instance of the component which has been declared from component section. From the sample above if you fill the instance as ::5 it means the permission will be applied to subject id 5 in CMpro module.
Permissions level: Select the permission level from the dropdown list box:
Operations: From this column you can insert a new permission system, edit and delete the permission row.

Modules Administration: Modules administration main page.
Regenerate module: If you have added or removed modules from the system you are required to generate the list to see the latest modules status. The regenerate link will display all modules which are available under your_root/modules directory and update the status. To initialize, activate or remove the module it can be done from the state column. See the explanation in no. 7 below.
Module name: All modules will be listed in this column. You can modify the module Display Name and Description by clicking the Module Name link.
Display name: Specify the module name.
Description: Description of the module purpose.
Directory: Module name should be the same with the module directory name. You can not change the module directory name, doing so will cause the module failed to work
State: The icons in this column display the status of both installed and un-installed modules:

: Installed, Active Module
: Installed, In-active Module
: To remove In-active Module
: Un-installed Module
: To remove Un-installed Module
In-active module: Here you can activate or remove the in-active module.
Un-initialize module: Here you can initialize the module or remove it from the system. To remove it permanently, you have to delete the module folder from modules directory.
Control Panel Manager: If you have added, initialized and activated a new module it will not automatically added to your Control Panel tabs. Click this Control Panel icon to configure the module tab.

If a requested page could not be found in the system, the Error module will generate an Error confirmation page. You can configure the Error confirmation page settings from the Error administration page.

Email Notification: Select from the dropdown list for the email notification to Administrators:
Redirect option: Select the option to redirect the Error confirmation page after certain seconds to other module or page. You can re-direct the confirmation page to selected News Article, News Topic, a Module, an URL address or you also can create a custome redirect page.
Redirect time: Set here the delay time for redirect page.

The Tinymax RTE or WYSIWYG editor allows non technical user to create a web content without knowing of HTML langguage. Here are some of the features supported by this module:

RTE

Settings area: You may have familiar with these features. Most of web forms now support the rte function where you can compose your text settings.
Images: With this tool you can insert images to the content area.
File Manager: Use this tool to organize your images or files. You can create folders and upload files from your local PC to web server.
Help: This is a help tool provided by the RTE plugins.
Content area: This is the area where you type your content.

Configuration

Tinymax is the managing module for the MDLite's text area editor. Its modularity, flexibility and expandability make of it a top performance module. From this section you can configure the text areas managed by the editor and the settings for TinyMCE (all the command buttons like "copy", "paste", "insert an image" and so on).

It is strongly suggested not to go deeply in the settings if you don't have a good programming knowledge of MDLite: an error here would cost you a lot of work!
